Project One: Color – Practice

I spent September and the first half of October practicing the mechanics of portrait painting and explored incorporating color into my pieces. I used a variety of actors/models as references.

This was my initial painted portrait. I played with light blue highlights to draw in the element of color.

I leaned into using color to depict mood in these practice pieces. On the left, I used purple shadows for a moody feel. On the right, I studied a monochromatic color scheme.

Although I dislike this piece a lot, it was important for me to get practice with the texture and feel of canvas. As you can see, I was quite critical of this work and used sharpie to correct some glaring mistakes.
