Uncovering What’s Next

Happy December, y’all! πŸ—»β„οΈπŸ›·β›ΈοΈ

After finishing the Elements Project, Project One: Color, I needed to play around a bit until I figured out which element I would focus on next. I started by choosing one of the proofs from my senior photography photoshoot as a reference. This would be my first ever painted self-portrait. I laid down the background and began on the darks and shadows of the face. After about 3 hours of work, I was dissatisfied with how it was turning out and I had to take a step away. When I came back, I painted over the composition with a fresh background and started over. After a brief session, I ran into a similar issue, feeling blocked and unable to become immersed in this piece. Instead of moving on, I organically placed brushstrokes and color on the canvas. My palette resembled the colors of my reference photo and there are slight nods that indicate facial structure, but otherwise, this composition is entirely abstract.

After reviewing this piece, I noticed that I layered line upon line to achieve the final product. The lines are curved and bent, following the natural movement of my hand and paintbrush. I want to experiment with this further and see how it can influence my style. All this goes to announce that my next Elements Project will be Project Two: Line.

Another little update. This is probably going to be my last post of the first semester. I am about to head off to winter break, so these will be the final days in the studio for 2024. I want to again thank all of the people who have encouraged my work this year, my Independent Study Advisor, and the wonderful haven I have to paint for hours at a time. I am looking forward to this rest and reset, but I am also excited to come back in January, 2025 and begin Project Two: Line. β† ❆ ❆
